How It All Started – The Origins Of Calypso

Our small business is located in a south eastern suburb of Sydney called Matraville. It used to be a lower socioeconomic area of the eastern suburbs but now it has become one of the most affluent areas.

We had taken over the business from the previous owners Blake and Lucy who started it up and ran it for a year. Back then it was known as Calypso Juice Bar. We decided to change the name to Calypso Cafe & Juice Bar to better reflect on the things we do. This was in 2015.

I had zero knowledge of hospitality and cafe operations when I started. My background was community pharmacy for the previous 5 years so this all was quite new to me. The early mornings – the getting your hands dirty and wet work – it was all a huge learning experience.

My goal of writing these blogs is to share my experiences of being a cafe owner and operator for the past 5 years and to give some insight into the industry. I want to share some of my best discoveries over these years that I have found which have made as much a 10-fold improvement to the way our cafe operates. On top of this, I would like to reveal some of the things that I wish someone had taught me in the beginning which would have saved so much time in the process. Speak soon.
